Some people develop a drive to be great, some are born with it. We met with adidas golf athlete and natural born competitor Linn Grant to talk about her journey with sport and how she views the game of golf in her own way.
adidas: How old were you when you started golfing?
Grant: I was around nine when I picked up a club and started playing with my friends.
adidas: What is an early memory that made you choose golf professionally?
Grant: The competitive part of golf has always been my favorite. I remember playing in tournaments during the summers at my home course, wanting to beat all my friends.
adidas: Who inspired you to start playing golf?
Grant: My dad and my brother. My dad competed as a midAM and has always [played at] a high level especially during my childhood. He practiced quite a lot so I would usually go out with him to the golf course to practice and play.
adidas: Who has been your biggest cheerleader throughout your time with sport?
Grant: My whole family, my dad has helped me more practically and guided me through every step of my journey. From being a coach to now helping me more with things outside the actual course. But there’s also a lot of people cheering me on from behind the scenes that I’m very grateful for. Family and close friends who are involved in different ways in my life and sport.
adidas: What is a career accomplishment (or a few) you are most proud of?
Grant: I’m obviously very proud of every win that I’ve had, representing Sweeden on many occasions, being an adidas athlete and so many more things.
adidas: How do you amp yourself up to compete?
Grant: (Laughs) I don’t have to amp myself up before a round. I love competing and it makes me more focused and nervous so to amp myself up would not necessarily be a good thing for me. I would rather try to stay in the present and focus on the things that matter and that I can control.
adidas: What does mental strength mean to you in your sport? How do you stay disciplined, focused, and overall content through the ups and downs of sports?
Grant: To me, it’s adaptation, discipline, and mindset. Regardless of if I’m on the golf course in the heat of the moment, practicing, in the gym, or just living my non-golfing life, to be able to adapt is a huge part of conquering all the challenges that I come across. To be a professional in an individual sport requires a lot of discipline and planning. Not only is there not a coach who tells you what to do all the time, but there’s also no teammates to push or challenge you when the motivation is lacking. Knowing that the only thing that stands in the way of my goals [is myself], is a satisfying thought and yet the most difficult one. Amongst all the things that are required of an athlete, golfer, or just a human being I think having an open mindset and seeing life as a journey with challenges helps me a lot.
adidas: What does it mean to you to be partnered with adidas?
Grant: When I think about sport performance, adidas is the brand that has always been at the top of my list. When I was in college at Arizona State University, I was able to wear adidas [gear] on the course due to the brand’s relationship with the university. Now that I’m a professional, it’s a brand I continue to believe in, that I love to be involved with as much as possible and that I love to wear.
